On January 19, 2002, Merz Pharma KGaA received the 22nd Innovation Prize of German Industry from the Federal Minister for Research and Education, Edelgard Bulmahn. The prize honored Merz Pharma’s trendsetting research efforts in studying the innovative mechanism of action of Memantine as an NMDA antagonist.
In 2001, Merz received the H.G. Creutzfeldt Pharmaceutical Prize for its product Amantadine for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The prize is awarded annually by the Creutzfeldt-Institut of Kiel, Germany, and is intended to honor drugs that have been proven for both acute and long-term therapy for some time and combine well with other drugs. Other criteria in awarding the prize are safety, tolerance, and cost-effectiveness.
