Merz works closely with scientists around the world. Merz annually awards the Friedrich Merz Guest Professorship to support scientific research projects. It also awards the Prize for Brain Research each year.
The Friedrich Merz Guest Professorship was established in December 1985 on behalf of the 100th birthday of Friedrich Merz by the current owners of the Company with the objective of appointing an especially distinguished scientist from the fields of pharmaceutics and human medicine to Frankfurt University for two to three months. The professorship is named after the founder of Merz Pharma, Friedrich Merz, who was one of the first members of the Senckenberg Society to be closely affiliated with Frankfurt University and who actively promoted science.
The guest professorship is launched with a reception given by the president of Frankfurt University at the University’s guesthouse. The conclusion is traditionally marked by a scientific symposium that is thematically oriented to the research focuses of the guest professor.
The Prize for Brain Research in Geriatrics is intended to award physicians, scientists, pharmacologists, caregivers, therapists, psychologists, and sociologists whose work in the field of application-related research and implemented fundamental research has made a significant contribution to the better diagnosis, therapy, support, and care of geriatric patients with brain diseases.
The Prize for Brain Research is endowed by Merz Pharma. The scientific agency is the Center for Age Research at the University of Witten/Herdecke.
