Throat

Cold symptoms are caused by the viruses and bacteria our body is exposed to every day in the air we breath. When the body’s natural protective mechanisms are not enough to fight off these organisms, we may get a cold. The first signs of a cold are a sore throat, hoarseness and a throat ache.

The mucous membranes in the throat are especially crucial in fighting off the cold viruses. As membranes, they trap these organisms and transport them out of the body through the air passageways.

If the mucous membranes are dry, due to dryness in heated or cooled rooms, for example, this self-cleaning mechanism no longer works and the mucus membranes become infected. Irritations and pain during swallowing and a raw feeling in your throat are typical signs.
