Merz + Co., Frankfurt, and Lundbeck A/S, Copenhagen, (www.lundbeck.com) announced today that they have entered into a strategic license and cooperation agreement for the further marketing and development of Merz’ compound memantine for dementia, neuropathic pain, and other central nervous system (CNS) indications.
“Merz is excited about this new partnership with Lundbeck A/S,” said Dr. Jochen Hückmann, president of Merz + Co. “In Lundbeck A/S we have an excellent strategic partner with a proven CNS track record marketing the antidepressant citalopram. We are anticipating that memantine will become a leading European drug for the treatment of AD and VaD.”

Merz has developed memantine and holds several patents for memantine in the treatment of different CNS indications. Merz currently markets memantine in Germany for dementia.
Merz recently entered a strategic alliance for memantine with Forest Laboratories for the U.S., and has Suntory Limited as the partner for Japan since 1997. The agreement with Lundbeck A/S therefore represents the completion of worldwide license and cooperation agreements. With a therapeutic focus on CNS diseases, Merz + Co. is a privately owned, research-based pharmaceutical company headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. The company has a turnover of approximately DEM 600 million and a staff of over 1,700 employees.
