Frankfurt am Main, 14.02.2001
Since 1985, the visiting professorship – named after the founder of the Frankfurt-based pharmaceutical company Merz + Co. – has been presented with the aim of calling a renowned international scientist from the areas of pharmaceutical research or medicine to the University of Frankfurt for two to three months.
This year the 14th professorship was awarded to Prof. Dr. Timo Juha Erkinjuntti from the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Helsinki, Finland. Prof. Steinmetz from the Neurology Clinic of Frankfurt, J.W. Goethe University hosted the visiting professorship.
Professor Erkinjuntti has gained international reputation for his studies in the field of cognitive neurology. His research, especially on vascular dementia, has proven to be very important for our understanding of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this disease group. He was the initiator of European and international research cooperations amongst neurologists, psychiatrists, clinical neuropsychologists, geriatricians and neuroradiologists. Particularly worth mentioning is his work on the NMR of vascular dementia (and other causes of the disease) and the importance of post-stroke depression. He supervised the Helsinki Aging Study, a cohort study on age-dependent changes in brain functions.
On February 14, 2001, on occasion of Prof. Erkinjuntti’s appointment, the symposium “Small vessel diseases, white matter lesions and vascular cognitive impairment” was held with many internationally renowned researchers.
