Merz + Co establishes forum on the future of dementia

Berlin/Frankfurt am Main, 06.12.2001

Dementia is still one of the great taboo subjects in our society. After all, who wants to think about the possibility of losing one’s mind? Or the care problems that this raises for the family? In Germany, roughly 1 to 1.2 million dementia patients and their families currently face problems of precisely this kind, however. The way in which these problems are dealt with is still very inadequate. There continue to be shortcomings in the area of diagnosis and also in the treatment and care of dementia patients. Alzheimer’s dementia is the commonest form of dementia, incidentally, accounting for about 50% of cases.

Merz + Co today presented the newly established forum on the future of dementia to the public at a press conference in Berlin. Its purpose is to plug the gaps in the available information and thereby improve the quality of care for dementia patients and the relatives who look after them.

The forum on the future of dementia will be assisted by an advisory panel of recognized experts.
