Merz Pharma KGaA is awarded the 22nd German Industry Innovation Award

Merz Pharma has been honoured for its development of the anti-dementia drug Akatinol Memantine® with the 22nd German Industry Innovation Award. The award panel was comprised of leading experts from academic institutions and business organisations.

Merz Pharma KGaA is among the foremost German ethical pharmaceutical companies with annual sales of €238m and among the leaders of the prescription pharmaceuticals market in the area of neurodegenerative diseases and hepatology. Other market leadership positions are in the area of consumer products. Core to Merz’s strategy is innovation and the efficient marketing of its products.

The award recognises the success in making Akatinol Memantine® the most prescribed anti-dementia drug among prescription medicines in Germany.

The award also recognises Merz Pharma’s research and development achievements to elucidate the innovative mechanism of action of NMDA antagonism and its subsequent patent protection.

Memantine is the first pharmaceutical with proof of efficacy in patients with advanced stages of Alzheimer’s dementia through enabling patients to achieve a higher competency to cope with activities of daily living.

The potential for Akatinol Memantine® is significant given the ageing of the population. Dementia is an age related condition for which few treatment options exist and thus the successful development of Memantine is a significant step forward in dementia management.

The award was presented on January 19th, 2002 in the Alte Oper in Frankfurt/Main by the German Minister for Research and Education, Edelgard Bulmahn and received by Dr. Jochen Hückmann, CEO of Merz Pharma KGaA.
