The EU Commission Approves Merz’ Memantine for Alzheimer’ Disease

Frankfurt am Main, 29.05.2002

Merz Pharmaceuticals has received approval for its dementia drug Memantine for the treatment of moderately severe to severe Alzheimer’s Disease. Merz will start launching Memantine under the trademark AXURA® in several countries in the EU and the world within the next few months.

Memantine is the first in a new class of patented NMDA receptor antagonists developed by Merz, demonstrating significant clinical efficacy in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease. With this approval Merz now also offers treatment in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s Disease in which no approved treatment is currently available. This is an important milestone for the company and further underlines Merz’ position as an innovator in neurology and psychiatry.

Earlier this year Merz was granted the “German Industry Innovations Prize” for the development of Memantine for the treatment of advanced Alzheimer’s Disease, a significant unmet medical need.

Merz has licensed exclusive rights for Memantine to Forest Laboratories Inc. for the United States. For a number of European markets as well as Canada, Australia and South Africa the exclusive rights has been granted to H. Lundbeck A/S. For the remaining countries Merz retains semi-exclusive rights. For Japan, Merz’ exclusive partner Suntory Ltd. is developing Memantine together with Daiichi Pharmaceuticals.

Merz is a privately owned, German researched-based pharmaceuticals company with head offices in Frankfurt/Main and therapeutic focus on neurology and psychiatry. The Merz group has a turnover of approximately 350 million EUR and a staff of over 1,700 employees.
