Frankfurt am Main, 15.11.2002
In the winter semester of 2002, Professor Norbert Schuff has been appointed as the Friedrich Merz Foundation visiting professor at the Institute of Neuroradiology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Hospital. Professor Schuff is the 15th visiting professor sponsored by the Frankfurt/Germany based pharmaceutical company Merz Pharma.
Professor Schuff is working at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in San Francisco, California (USA). His primary focus of research is in medical imaging, especially magnetic resonance tomography and MR spectroscopy. Using these two techniques, he is developing and improving methods to measure structural, functional and metabolic changes in the human brain, associated with normal aging or neurodegenerative disorders, like Alzheimer’s disease. Another main focus of his research involves optimizing data acquisition efficiency through multiplanar spectroscopic measurement and image analysis algorithms to improve image resolution.
The clinical research objective of Professor Schuff is to investigate markers with imaging that could facilitate the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, monitor disease progression and possible effects of treatment. In this respect, Professor Schuff is studying the physiological aging of the human brain and various forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia, Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
As both magnetic resonance tomography and MR spectroscopy represent major areas of research at the Institute of Neuroradiology, we hope that this new appointment will help to establish an intensive academical exchange of ideas and long-term cooperation with research groups in the USA. The desire for a scientific cooperation between the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Institute of Neuroradiology is also made evident from a series of joint events that are planned together with Professor Schuff. These include a reception by the University President on 11-18-2002, a large public meeting being held in the Palm Garden on 11-14-2002 and a one-day symposium on diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer’s disease on 11-27-2002.
