Results published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, one of the world’s leading medical trade publications, confirm that the new Alzheimer drug from Merz makes daily life much easier for patients with advanced to severe Alzheimer’s disease. According to the study, the drug increases patients' mental performance and cognitive skills and makes it easier for them to perform activities of daily living such as eating, washing, or doing simple housework. But it also improves the global clinical impression of the patients. The Alzheimer drug from Merz uses the active ingredient Memantine and is the first in the world that makes it possible to treat advanced Alzheimer (moderate to severe Alzheimer dementia). It has been approved in Europe since last May and has been on the market in Germany since August 2002.
Due to the active participation of patients in daily life, family members and caregivers of Alzheimer patients are also relieved to a significant degree. Patients with advanced Alzheimer’s require full care, which translates to an average of 15 hours of patient care per day. The drug makes it possible to reduce the time needed for patient care by more than 45 hours a month. The drug benefits everyone involved: it gives patients more independence and satisfaction and relatives and caregivers more freedom.
Two hundred and fifty-two patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer dementia participated in the study. For 28 weeks, the patients were examined at 32 research facilities in the USA using a placebo-controlled double-blind study. All of the patients achieved better results than the control group, which received tablets without the active ingredient (placebo). None of the patients received any other dementia drugs.
