Frankfurt am Main, 26.07.2007
The pharmaceutical company Merz has invested a further million Euro sum in its production location in Dessau, Germany. The groundbreaking for the production facilities was already held in April of 2007, representing the Frankfurt company's largest single investment-to-date of 17.7 million Euros. Merz would like to use the new investment amount to integrate a parenterals pilot plant into the newly planned facility.
"The new pilot plant will promote the optimization of our processes and the manufacture of clinical prototypes for various dosage forms of parenteral pharmaceuticals," says Dr. Bernd Dölle, Head of the Reinheim and Dessau plants at Merz Group Services.
Parenteral dosage forms are sterile preparations that are intended for injection, infusion, or implantation in the human body. The company produces the active ingredient botulinum neurotoxin type A, a product of its own research, as well as the finished pharmaceutical product at its location in Dessau. In addition to the already-standing biotechnology facilities for active ingredient production, the parenteral pilot plant will round out the palette of production and process optimization functions for final, parenteral pharmaceutical dosage forms at the location.
"This investment is a deliberate step in the optimal utilization of the preexisting infrastructure," Dölle states. The date of completion for the entire facility is planned for August of 2008.
The botulinum neurotoxin type A has been approved since May of 2005 for use with the indications blepharospasm (dystonia of the eyelid) and cervical dystonia of a predominately rotational form (spasmodic torticollis, wryneck) in Germany. Approvals for use in Denmark and Sweden have also been issued to the company. Approval for further European countries should follow within the year.
Outside of Europe, use with these indications is also approved in Argentina and Mexico. In Argentina, the preparation is approved for further use in aesthetic dermatology for the temporary improvement of glabellar frown lines.
