Research & Development

Merz Pharmaceuticals

At Merz, research is concentrated on fields with a strong need for therapeutic innovation and significant benefits from a medical perspective. The focus is on neurological and psychiatric diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, tinnitus, chronic pain conditions, addictions, and neuromuscular disturbances. Another competency of Merz is the clinical and aesthetic dermatology.

In our intensive cooperation with nationally and internationally recognized experts and renowned scientific institutions we develop and optimize new compounds. Only Merz substances with patent protection, innovative mechanisms of action, and convincingly improved therapeutic benefits go through the lengthy process of preclinical and clinical development. The latest testing procedures ensure effectiveness and safety in use.

Therapeutic innovation is not possible without scientific research. Merz Pharmaceuticals spends about a fifth of its sales on research and development each year and with that more than the average research expenditures in the industry. This is how the Company is creating the conditions for promising future treatment methods today.

Merz Consumer Care

In the OTC segment, our development activities focus on products for preventive care and self-treatment of everyday complaints as well as dermopharmaceutical products.

Merz is a leader in the markets for bath care (balneology), cold remedies, vitamins and minerals and products for skin, hair, and nails. We are continuously studying new combinations of active ingredients and formulations. In many cases, these are unique combinations that are protected by patents.

The scientific documentation of the effectiveness and compatibility of products is an important focus of our research and development efforts. It guarantees consumers the high effectiveness, quality standards, and convincing benefits they have come to expect of products from Merz.
