Roughly one in two people with chronic tinnitus say it has little or no effect on their daily lives. However, some people find the noises have a negative effect on their work and their social lives. Sleeping disorders (particularly difficulty in falling asleep or sleeping through the night) are very common, and can cause anxiety and symptoms of depression. Other important consequences are a subjective impairment of speech intelligibility, concentration difficulties, and an inability to relax.
The extent of the distress does not always depend on the volume of tinnitus. Even relatively quiet noises can cause severe tinnitus; relatively loud noises do not necessarily cause severe tinnitus.
